Nation-wide soaking and a cloudy week for Australia

Rain will soak part of every state and territory in Australia this week, with flooding possible in the Murray Darling Basin from Thursday.

A low pressure system and cold front interacting with a feed of tropical moisture will cause a northwest cloudband to pass over Australia this week.

Rain will initially fall over WA on Monday as the low and front pass over the state. Cloud and rain will then spread into central Australia and SA on Tuesday and Wednesday, before drenching southeastern and eastern Australia on Thursday and Friday.

Following this nation-wide soaking, another cloudband and cold front will deliver some follow-up rain over central and southeastern Australia on the weekend.

The map below shows how much rain one computer model is predicting during the next seven days from this week’s series of moisture-laden cloudbands.

Rain should affect all of the Murray Darling Basin this week, with some areas possibly seeing enough rain to cause flooding.

In addition to the rain, several states will also see thunderstorms, particularly over central Australia, northern NSW and QLD.

The northwest cloudband which will travel southeast across Australia this week causing cloudy conditions over much of Australia. This cloud should reduce solar output this week across several states and territories.

Solar power is becoming increasingly important in the Australian energy markets; however, the variable nature of solar generation poses significant challenges for integration into the electricity industry.

Weatherzone, in partnership with Solcastprovides solar power forecasting and solar irradiance data, for both large-scale solar farms and small-scale PV systems, plus their grid or regional aggregates. For more information, please contact us at apac.sales@dtn.com
