Weatherzone’s 25th Anniversary Celebrations

Here at Weatherzone, a DTN company, we are celebrating our 25-year anniversary. It’s been a quarter of a century well spent – delivering invaluable weather intelligence to support the everyday safety and decision-making of individuals, communities, and businesses. We’re definitely not feeling creaky in the knees; moving from strength to strength as we focus on addressing future challenges. And it’s the perfect time to take a moment to reflect on the journey thus far.

In 1998, traditional broadcast weather information was often a little tired and stood to benefit from a significant spruce up. Weatherzone, known then solely as The Weather Company, was born and began transforming the weather segment in the television industry, one network at a time. Graphics were enlivened, and language was simplified and delivered in a way that engaged audiences. Before long, five major Australian networks had Weatherzone preparing and driving their weather offerings.

Expanding our intention to make weather information more accessible for everyone, we turned our capabilities towards serving weather-sensitive industries. Diversifying into other sectors such as aviation, energy and marine, our weather and analytics solutions evolved, adapting to each client’s unique operational requirements. Through our scientific innovation and diligence, our key offerings gained significant trust from industry leaders. In 2013 we developed Aviation Watch, an unrivalled weather forecast planning tool for Australia’s national carrier. In 2014, we joined forces with Earth Networks creating Weatherzone’s Total Lightning Network (WZTLN). This advanced lightning classification, detection and alerting across Australia. One highlight that underscored years of scientific and product development was the recognition of our Weatherzone app. The app won the World Meteorological Organisation’s International Weather App Award for ‘Private Sector Information Content: reliability, usefulness, quality and quantity of information’ in 2020.

Following these successes, DTN, an independent source of analysis and decision-support solutions, acquired Weatherzone in 2019. This acquisition underscored DTN’s commitment to providing the most accurate, actionable insights to customers throughout the world. We continue to expand and evolve under the DTN umbrella, delivering crucial weather data and enhanced services that assist those who feed, fuel, and protect the world.

Under the leadership of Martin Palmer and in step with DTN, we’re currently focused on contributing to global efforts aimed at supporting critical industries and vulnerable communities across Asia and the Pacific, as we face an increasingly uncertain climate and rising sea levels. The World Meteorological Organisation has outlaid an ambitious initiative to deliver early life-saving warnings for everyone on Earth by 2027. In close collaboration with national meteorological services, governments, and NGOs, we are identifying how we can leverage our industry-leading solutions to assist with the detection, warning, observation, forecasting and monitoring of severe weather in these regions. We are also continuing to work closely with DTN teams across the world as we scale up our weather intelligence offerings to serve an increase in global customers. Together, we are assisting our clients to optimise their planning for, and response to, unprecedented conditions.

This is also the moment to say a heartfelt thank you, from Martin and all of us, to every individual and business that has chosen to trust Weatherzone to help deliver what you need, when you need it. We deeply appreciate the reciprocal relationships developed across multiple industries and being able to assist millions to stay safe and plan their days. It’s a privilege to serve our vast community, and we will continue to do so with dedication, an unwavering eye for innovation, and scientific rigour.
